CEO David Stevenson says the league will remain patient in choosing the destinations of the competition's next teams.

NBL CEO David Stevenson has re-iterated the competition is not going to “expand for expansion’s sake” in an interview with Code Sports, but has revealed there are a number of local and international destinations currently in conversations with the league about hosting the NBL’s next team.

The competition’s most recent introduction, the Tasmania JackJumpers, have seen huge success both on and off the court in their first three seasons in the NBL, and will enter NBL25 as the league’s reigning champions following their breathless Game 5 Championship Series win over Melbourne United.

“We don’t need to expand for expansion’s sake,” Stevenson said. “We’ve seen the value of performing from day one; I think the JackJumpers are the most successful expansion sporting club of any league in Australia.

“But this league has had a history of new teams coming in and going out pretty quickly.

“We just can’t afford to let our fans down. To build this emotional connection to a sport and to a team, and then all of a sudden that team doesn’t exist.”

Stevenson then went onto label the Gold Coast as a “promising” expansion option.
