NBL helping Anthony regain hoops joy

Cole Anthony has only been in Australia for less than a month, but the former first-round NBA Draft pick has settled into his new home quickly.

"I struggled the last couple of years to find that joy for the game, but shoot, it's hard to not get out here and enjoy what I'm seeing when I'm around," he said during the broadcast at the 2026 CODE Sports NBL Blitz.

Anthony, who missed both of Melbourne United's games in Bendigo due to injury, is set to face Bryce Cotton in the season opener on September 19, which will tip things off with one of the most exciting matchups in the League.

"I mean he's a six-time MVP, that kind of speaks for itself," he said.

"He's another dude who could definitely be playing in the NBA.

"But he's come out here, and he's found a home, and he hasn't left.

"I'm out here now, I'm seeing why he hasn't left.

"It's a real good style of living; it's a really strong League. Dudes are out here battling every time… It's still pre-season, and I see how hard teams are going, so it's a good level."

Anthony's signing in the NBL was one of the biggest the League has ever seen, as the 26-year-old turned down significant European opportunities to come to Australia and reunite with former Orlando Magic teammate, Joe Ingles.

"I think basketball as a whole… all over the world… everyone's just becoming more talented than they were 10 to 15 years ago," he added.

"For me, I just try to stay ready. I always try to get as much work on the court as I can; that's kind of always what I've prided myself on is my work ethic."

United and the 36ers will lock horns from 7.30pm AEST on Saturday, September 19 at John Cain Arena.
