Deep impact: Travers declares United NBL's most stacked team

Melbourne United have had a big off-season of recruiting, and early indications are that investment is paying off.

Jacob Chance's side claimed the Loggins-Bruton Cup as CODE Sports NBL Blitz champions on Sunday, with key man Luke Travers adamant it's only a sign of things to come this season.

Travers earned the Ray Borner Award as tournament MVP, with averages of 18 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks, but he says that honour pales next to winning as a team.

"I know a lot of people are talking about who it is, but we're the deepest team in the league," Travers told CODE Sports.

Newcomers Josh Oduro, Cole Anthony and Sam Waardenburg all played significant minutes across the Blitz, with Joe Ingles still to make his debut ahead of the team's season-opener on September 19.

Sunday's win was tempered somewhat by potential injuries to Waardenburg and Shea Ili, but Travers says once United have their full complement of players available, they'll be hard to stop.

"Really, we were coming into the Blitz aiming to gel early, and I think we did a good job of that," he said. "But there's still a lot of room for improvement.

"We obviously have a lot of guys who have ambitions of getting that one step further."

While an NBA return remains on Travers' radar after 24 games with the Cleveland Cavaliers, right now it's all about the team.

"We've put our individual goals to the side and, if we win, people will get where they want to go," he added.
