Stars unite in Corey’s fight

"Corey’s been nothing but positive, and it’s hard not to want to help a guy like that."

Past and present players, great mates and family members threw their support behind Corey Williams on Friday at a special golf day.

In conjunction with NBL Assists, the event was organised to recognise Williams' ongoing fight with cancer and raise funds to assist in his recovery.

Williams was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic colon cancer in August last year and has been engaged in an ongoing fight ever since.

“Some days are tougher than others, some days are better. But you’ve just got to keep pushing through,” Williams told 10 News First.

Two-time NBL champion, Lanard Copeland spoke on the significance of the day, and the strong connection between the basketball community in getting around their fellow alumni.

“Corey is an icon of Australian basketball, so whenever anything happens like this the basketball community gets together and see if we can help,” Copeland said.

“Corey’s been nothing but positive, and it’s hard not to want to help a guy like that.”

Famous names of our game like Andrew Gaze, Michele Timms, and Mark Bradtke were present on each hole as part of the 18-hole course, which was followed by a Sportsperson’s Panel and Auction.

Former NBL champion and analyst Peter Hooley was thrilled to see such incredible support of his great mate.

“The basketball community is so strong. Especially in Australia, it’s smaller than a lot of other basketball communities around the world, which means you’ve got that strength in people and love,” Hooley said.

“He (Williams) continues to inspire people every single day, with the strength he has, his mindset. Every single day he attacks, this is something that we can learn from, we can all take something to live our lives going forward.”

“When he walks into a room he lights the room up, and even with the challenges that he’s faced, he’s still been able to maintain an upbeat personality,” Andrew Gaze added.
