Why Davis chose Sydney

"He sent me film of [him] playing with Kyrie Irving, and picturing, like, this is you."

The Sydney Kings have locked in one of the most talented guards the league has seen, with Kendric Davis pairing with veteran Matthew Dellavedova in a star-studded backcourt.

Davis has made no secret of his dream is to make an NBA roster, believing that his move to the Kings will get him one step closer to achieving that goal.

"[Brian Goorjian] was telling me he can get me to the NBA," Davis told ESPN’s Olgun Uluc in an exclusive interview.

"[The Kings] platform can help me get to the NBA, and they believed I was an NBA player. But, with that, he said you know we've got to win. I said 'yeah'."

Davis had a historical first season in the NBL, putting up over 25 points and eight assists per game, finishing runner-up MVP.

There were many reasons as to why the Kings became an enticing opportunity for Davis, but perhaps it was the opportunity to play alongside an NBA champion and Olympian that was the most influential.

"I want to play with Matthew," Davis said.

"I know Delly's a proven winner, who helps my game a lot. Everyone knows how unselfish he is, how willing a defender he is, how great a leader he is.

"Delly wanted to play with me and I wanted to play with Delly."

While there will be some questions around how the two primary ball-handlers will play alongside each other, it was Dellavedova who reportedly took the initiative to plant the foundation for their chemistry next season.

"He sent me film of [him] playing with Kyrie Irving, and picturing, like, this is you ... with Kyrie, this could be you," Davis said.

"If a team wants to try to deny me, Delly sent me a 10-minute clip of Kyrie Irving getting backdoor layups because teams wanted to deny him getting pin-downs coming off curling to his midrange or a three."
