Triple threat: JackJumpers unveil new-look leadership group

Will Magnay is back as JackJumpers captain for NBL27, joined by Josh Bannan and Taran Armstrong in a refreshed leadership group.

The Tasmania JackJumpers will open their Hungry Jack's NBL27 Season on Monday, September 21 against South East Melbourne.

When the JackJumpers run onto the hardwood at MyState Bank Arena, they will once again be led by big man Will Magnay, who was recently unveiled as the club's skipper for the second straight season.

"I have a lot of respect for each and every one of my teammates and coaching staff and for them to think of me in that position and want me to be the face and the leader of this team is really special to me and it means a lot to myself and my family," Magnay said during the club's recent media availability.

"To be able to represent not only them but the state of Tasmania wherever we are in Australia, it's super special [and an honour I don't take for granted]."

Joining Magnay in the leadership group are forward Josh Bannan and guard Taran Armstrong, with Magnay particularly excited about what the latter's appointment means for the Tasmanian community.

"Taran's obviously a new, fresh voice, [but also a] super smart player and good role model," Magnay said.

"[It's] exciting to have a Tasmanian in that leadership group for young Tasmanians to look up to, [showing] they can be a captain of this club in the future."

When the Ants finally get their season underway, Magnay is confident his team can improve on last season's Play-In Qualifier exit.

"I've always thought we've had good teams [going into every season]," he said.

"Pre-season's always exciting and fun, as we figure out who we are and what our identity is.

"We're probably a little bit bigger this year than we ever have been, with legitimate size [across the board], which is exciting.

"[That] takes a bit of pressure off Bannan and myself and lets us be more explosive in bursts, [meaning] we don't have to play for long stretches.

"The eagerness to learn, across the young group, is super exciting for the future of the club and really cool to be a part of."
