Goorjian chases glory now, with Bogut potentially next

With seven NBL championships to his name, Sydney Kings' Brian Goorjian is arguably the League's greatest ever coach.

Now, as his Kings prepare to embark on the defence of the Hungry Jack's NBL26 title, the supercoach has explained his time in the Harbour City might be coming towards its finale.

"My approach is that I'm coaching every day like this is it," Goorjian said to CODE Sports.

"I had a three-year contract, and I've been involved in a mentorship with [Andrew Bogut], which is moving along nicely. That was the plan to come in and mentor Andrew and wherever that goes and grows to. This is year two of that, and I'm at the finish of my contract."

How that looks for Bogut's potential head coaching ambitions moving forward remains to be seen. But for the 73-year-old, who has won 598 of his 873 games in the League, one thing is clear: he's still desperate to bring more success to Sydney while he's at the helm.

"When you are doing this job, it is about having the energy that they (the players) deserve," he said.

"Physically, I know within myself that I'm not done. I won't say that I feel in my prime, but I know I've got a lot left."

Sydney, who had Kendric Davis arrive in the country over the weekend, open their title defence on Sunday, September 20 against Cairns at Afterpay Arena from 5pm AEST.
