A storm is coming, and it remains to be seen if its severity will impact this week’s game in Cairns.
Cyclone Jasper is threatening to derail the Taipans' home game against the Breakers on Friday night with the League keeping an eye on the sky in North Queensland.
“We are working very closely with both clubs and the Cairns Convention Centre whilst closely monitoring information being supplied by the Bureau of Meteorology to ensure the safety of our players, coaches, staff and fans is the priority,” NBL Executive General Manager of Competitions and Operations, Sean Gottliebsen said.
“Early indications are that we will be able to proceed with the game, but at all times we will be guided by the experts on whether or not it’s safe to continue. In the event that we cannot proceed, we have identified a number of dates and opportunities to reschedule the game.”
In order to prepare, the Breakers will fly to Brisbane on Wednesday and will be placed on standby to continue through to Cairns later in the week. Cyclone Jasper is currently circling about 200km off the coast of Cairns and is expected to reach landfall on Wednesday morning.
“If we get the all clear and it’s appropriate to push ahead with the game, New Zealand will travel to Cairns on Thursday to prepare,” Gottliebsen added.
“As further information comes to hand, we will update our fans accordingly.”
