"We owed them one": Cameron delivers on the big stage

Mike Wells praised Flynn Cameron’s versatility and growth after the guard’s career-best performance in Adelaide’s win over Sydney.

When Flynn Cameron arrived at the Adelaide 36ers, head coach Mike Wells made it clear he believed the young guard was ready to take the "next step" in his career.

Wells even travelled to New Zealand to underline just how strongly the club wanted him, and the Tall Blacks international has repaid that faith with his performances this season.

Friday night brought another statement from Cameron, who scored 25 points in a match-winning display.

“I ask him to play one-through-four … he’d probably play the five and do whatever,” Wells said post-game, praising the 25-year-old’s versatility.

“He gives us a ton of variety on our offence.

“Having guys like Flynn and Z (Zylan Cheatham) being able to bring the ball up and those guys being able to guard multiple-type positions … one time he’s (Cameron) on KD, and the next time he’s on Cooks, and I ask a lot of them.”

The 36ers improved to 18-4 on the season, producing a composed final-quarter performance to see off Sydney, widely regarded as the competition’s form team.

For Cameron, it marked a career-best outing. With stars such as Bryce Cotton, Xavier Cooks and Kendric Davis on the floor, it was the young guard who ultimately made the difference.

“I think it’s my best game in this gym,” he said.

Logging more than double the minutes he did in Melbourne last season, Cameron has significantly increased his production, averaging 11.1 points (up from 6), 4.7 rebounds (up from 2.1) and 2.7 assists (up from 1) per game so far this year.

“I’m loving it. I’m happy with the move,” he said.

“Coming into a new environment. Being a part of Adelaide, you can feel it in every training. We felt it in the pre-season.

“The team we recruited we knew we could do something special this year and we don’t want to take for granted the opportunity we have. We’re just trying to give it our all.”

Cameron said the win carried extra meaning after two earlier defeats to the Kings this season.

“Us as a team collectively, we felt like we owed them one,” he added.

“We were 0 and 2 against them going into this game. They’re the only team we hadn’t beaten all season … to get this one under the belt, we feel confident going into the playoffs that we can beat every team in this competition.”

The 36ers have a quick turnaround, taking on the Bullets in Brisbane on Sunday.
