Sunday best: Dech perfect fit in Perth?

"When you look at the rest of the market, that’s almost a piece they have to get."

Sunday Dech looms as one of the best free agents still available in the NBL market, and the Perth Wildcats have emerged as a serious contender.

“Perth has recently reached out to Sunday,” ESPN’s Olgun Uluc said. “They like the idea of bringing him in. They may have to overpay for someone like Sunday Dech.

“The Wildcats are a team looking at Sunday really closely right now, and when you look at the rest of the market, that’s almost a piece they have to get.

“You look at impact players still available in free agency who could be part of an eight or nine-man playoff rotation - Sunday Dech is one of the only names remaining who I think slots into that.”

Pete Hooley believes Dech would be a strong fit in Perth.

“If you start Dech at the two, bring back (Dylan) Windler and (Kristian) Doolittle, then you’ve got your bookends that could make or break your season,” he said.

“You go out there and land a marquee JLA (Jo Lual-Acuil Jr), Yanni Wetzell-type five and a dynamic import one … suddenly, you’re looking very, very good.”

Dech has spent the last five seasons in Adelaide, but looks certain to find a new home during free agency.

While Brisbane and South East Melbourne have also shown interest, the Wildcats’ needs and roster mix make them a strong candidate.

Uluc said Dech comes with a significant price tag, which could put off potential suitors outside of Perth.

“Sunday Dech wants a certain amount of money, and right now a lot of teams are just not willing to pay up to it,” he added.

“The 36ers had some interest initially, but they weren’t willing to meet the number. Then they got Flynn Cameron in, so they effectively replaced Sunday with Flynn.”
