"I did a few workouts, and this was probably one of my worst ones."

It hasn’t taken long for Alex Toohey to find his footing in Golden State, with the second-round pick embracing his new home with the Warriors.

“It was a luck of the dice, but I feel like I got pretty lucky,” he said at his introductory press conference.

The 21-year-old has landed in perhaps the perfect spot for his future, thanks in part to his connection with Warriors champion and Australian basketball legend Andrew Bogut.

“First thing he said, he loved the city here, loved his time here, likes to get back here,” Toohey said of his conversations with Bogut.

“Then just head to toe, the organisation’s committed to winning and everything’s trying to get better each year. The way they play basketball is also very Australian.”

When asked to elaborate on what he meant by the Australian style of play, Toohey was quick to point out it’s a character trait shared by many previous players, including Bogut.

“I think just looking at finding your teammates more and enjoying your teammates’ success is a big part of Australian basketball. And then just being tough, being versatile, and being smart basketball players.”

Toohey’s new home seems like a match made in heaven. Yet for the former Sydney Kings Next Star, he wasn’t always sure it would turn out this way.

“I did a few workouts, and this was probably one of my worst ones,” he laughed.

“So when I got the call, I kind of felt like apologising and saying, ‘I’m sorry about the workout, but thanks for doing your job earlier and researching and stuff' ... but yeah, it’s exciting.”
