REPORT: Phoenix add defensive anchor

Monday, August 11, 2025

The South East Melbourne Phoenix have reportedly added John Brown III to their NBL26 roster.

The South East Melbourne Phoenix have landed on their biggest and perhaps most important piece, with Herald Sun’s Mick Randall reporting John Brown III is set to join the team for NBL26.

At 203cm, Brown boasts an impressive defensive skill set that should flourish under Josh King’s coaching and in his system.

The 33-year-old has a very strong European career to date, which includes winning the Serbian Cup this season and a two-time French League champion in the years prior.

Also crowned the best defender in 2024, it’s Brown’s length, atheism and defensive IQ which will instantly put him into contention as one of the best defenders in NBL26.

NBL fans nearly had their first introduction to Brown three years ago, when it looked as if the big man was set to join the Perth Wildcats as a mid-season recruit in hopes to be eligible for their post-season run.
