New Marquee on Tatum’s Mind

New Marquee on Tatum’s Mind

"I'm also looking for a marquee Aussie four to be able to put in that situation."

The Illawarra Hawks are already largely set roster-wise ahead of next season, putting themselves well ahead of the rest of the league.

“I've been working on trying to get the majority of our players back so we can try to repeat,” Justin Tatum told the Illawarra Mercury.

With Darius Days and Trey Kell III the two key pieces from this year’s winning team not signed on, it’s that power forward spot that is going to be crucial for the champions ahead of next season.

"I'm also looking for a marquee Aussie four to be able to put in that situation,” Tatum said.

Tatum describes that potential signing as someone who has ‘Gary Clark-like experience.’

That signing will be even more important for Illawarra due to Sam Froling recovering from an Achilles injury and Lachlan Olbrich’s return clouded with uncertainty as he enters the NBA Draft.

Last season the Hawks had nine players return from the season prior, where they lost an agonizingly close Game 3 to Melbourne United. It was that continuity that no doubt helped give them an extra boost in their title run.

Now, the task is to continue that trend and plug some key holes remaining as they look ahead to NBL26.

Tatum understands that with success, comes the rising price tag for individuals and that’s part of the puzzle for the Hawks going forward.

“I want my players to understand their value, and they get what they get,” he said.

"If that means you are here and getting your work, fine. If it means going somewhere else, that's OK, but taking care of yourself and your family is important at the end of the day.”
