"I have a gut feeling": Roth on Magnay’s next chapter

Tuesday, July 22, 2025

"We'll have information on him tomorrow and we'll see where it goes."

Scott Roth says he has a "gut feeling" about where Will Magnay could end up next season, but the JackJumpers coach is keeping it to himself for now.

Magnay is believed to be in the mix for an NBA two-way deal, with the Memphis Grizzlies a likely landing spot after his recent Summer League showing. But if that path doesn’t pan out, the NBL24 Champions would gladly have him back in Tasmania.

"We'll have information on him tomorrow and we'll see where it goes," Roth said on Monday.

"Do you have a gut feel of where it might go?" a reporter queried.

"I have a gut feeling," Roth added, remaining coy on the next steps for the star big man.

Magnay delivered the most productive season of his career in NBL25, averaging 13.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. Despite battling through injuries, his performances were enough to catch the attention of NBA scouts and put him firmly on the radar.

Another former JackJumper making a push for the NBA is Jack McVeigh, who remains determined to keep his dream alive after being waived by Houston.

Although he hasn’t locked in an overseas deal, Roth believes it’s too early to even ponder a fairytale return to the NBL.

"His focus right now is just to get through the NBA and that's all he's concentrating on. We've let him go down that route," Roth continued.

"Our roster is full, and at that point, we'll see what transpires. But for him, his dream is still chasing and he's done a nice job over in Summer League in a few games. He's very single-minded and very much focused on the NBA."

Roth said McVeigh would have no shortage of opportunities around the world if an NBA contract doesn’t come through.

"Hopefully, he stays in the NBA and gets another two-way or onto a roster. That's what he's chasing. He's earned the right to do whatever he wants to do," he added.

"He's done wonderful things for us in the state, and this is his moment to make as much money as possible and get security for his family. Where that takes him is really going to be up to him."
