Roth's letter from all-time great

It’s not every day you receive a hand-written note from someone recognised as one of the greatest NBA coaches of all-time, so for Scott Roth it was no doubt a special moment when he opened his mailbox to a letter from Gregg Popovich.

Roth’s daughter Dené shared the heartfelt note from the five-time NBA champion coach via X.

“Hello Scott. Congrats on your wonderful championship season! I know you are still smiling after such a great win,” the letter said.

“I trust Tasmania offered a good experience in many ways and I wish you well moving forward.

“Who would have guessed two old Spurs like us would be decent coaches!

“With respect, Pop.”

Roth played at the San Antonio Spurs while Popovich was a young assistant coach back in 1989, ten years before the latter won his first championship as head coach.

At 75 years of age, Popovich has been the Spurs’ main man for the past 28 seasons.

Roth is now forging an incredible coaching journey himself, leading the Tasmania JackJumpers to their first ever NBL championship, in just the team’s third season in existence.
