NBL1 Wrap (May 13, 2024)

Monday, May 13, 2024

NBL players are front and centre suiting up for a multitude of teams across all NBL1 conferences.

Owen Foxwell starred in Eltham’s Round 6 double-header in NBL1 South, however a 30-point performance against the Ballarat Miners wasn’t enough to pull the Wildcats to a pair of victories over the weekend.

With fellow star Angus Glover missing for the Wildcats’ first game of the round, Foxwell dropped a season-high 30 points against NBL24 teammate Luke Rosendale and the Ballarat Miners, however 26 points from Nicholas Stoddart and a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double from Majok Majok led the Miners to a 13-point win.

Glover returned for the Wildcats’ second game of the round – this time against Knox– and he and Foxwell helped guide the side to victory over an NBL24-filled Raiders squad.

Foxwell finished the game with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Glover top-scored for his side with 24 points.

For the Raiders, Austin Rapp had 22 points and 10 rebounds in the defeat, while Melbourne’s Kyle Bowen added 15 points and 12 rebounds of his own.

Adelaide’s Nick Marshall has continued his stellar form for Mt Gambier, and teamed up with 36ers teammate Akech Aliir to take down the Nunawading Spectres in convincing fashion.

Marshall was on triple double watch for the clash, and ended the game with 34 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, while Aliir ably played a support role in the 18-point win with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Former Melbourne United and Boomers forward Brad Newley is continuing to ply his trade with Frankston and starred for the Blues in the absence of Lachlan and Lucas Barker over the weekend.

The 39-year-old played over 30 minutes and added 18 points and eight rebounds in the Blues’ defeat to Bendigo.

Jackson Makoi continued his immense form for Northside in NBL1 North but, unlike his NBL1 South contemporary Foxwell, was unable to pull the Wizards to victory this weekend.

Makoi played almost the entire game against Cairns and added 24 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, but 30 points from Kody Stattmann led the Marlins to a nine-point win.

The Wizards then took on a Gold Coast side that featured Will Magnay for the first time this season, and while Makoi’s 26 points, eight rebounds and eight assists were ably supported by former Bullet Lual Diing’s 21 points and 14 boards, the Rollers emerged as four-point victors after an overtime period.

Jason Cadee was his usual imperious self with 25 points and 15 assists, while Magnay added 10 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks in his first NBL1 game of the season.

South East Melbourne guard Matt Kenyon has also stayed atop NBL1 North’s rebounding stakes after a pair of strong performances for North Gold Coast.

He led his side to a four-point win over Sunshine Coast to open the round, before Nathan Sobey and DJ Mitchell led Ipswich to victory over Kenyon’s side.

Reported NBL Next Star target Roman Siulepa pulled together his strongest game of the season against Sam McDaniel and the Brisbane Capitals. The exciting youngster added 26 points and 15 rebounds for SW Metro Pirates in the absence of Lamar Patterson.

William Hickey’s dominance of NBL1 East has continued with the Albury-Wodonga Bandits, and the Illawarra guard added yet another triple double as his side consolidated its position inside the competition’s top three.

The Bandits emerged from their weekend double-header with a pair of big wins. First, Hickey stuffed the stat-sheet with 14 points, 10 rebounds, 14 assists, four blocks and four steals in a 22-point win over Bankstown. Then, he dropped 31 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in a 15-point win over Penrith.

Alex Starling’s South Adelaide side took on Adelaide 36ers legend Daniel Johnson and the Forestville Eagles in one of the top games of the NBL1 Central season so far.

The veteran pair slugged it out in the paint, but it was Johnson’s Eagles who emerged as one-point winners despite an immense final quarter fightback from the Panthers.

Johnson top-scored for his side with 28 points and nine rebounds, while Starling had 19 points and four blocks in the one-point defeat.

Michael Harris led the NBL’s contingent in NBL1 West, as his Warwick Senators also experienced a split double-header round.

Harris’ 18 points couldn’t help pull his side over the line against powerhouse side Joondalup, however he guided his team to victory over Rhys Vague’s Cockburn Cougars.

He top-scored with 31 points in the 20-point win, while teammate Tyler Shand put up an incredible 17 rebounds and 11 assists, but miraculously fell one-point short of a triple double.
