Earlier this month, Mike Wells shocked the NBL world by stepping down as the Head Coach of the Adelaide 36ers.

After two seasons with the Sixers, including guiding them to the Hungry Jack’s NBL26 Championship Series, Wells decided to part ways with the club to be closer to his family in the United States.

In a recent interview with basketball.com.au, Wells explained his decision with former 36er Jason Cadee.

"[Leaving was] maybe one of the hardest things ever, I'll be honest with you," Wells said on the latest edition of Cut to the Jase.

"When we left Adelaide to come back to the US, it was definitely my intention to come back.

“I had one more year on my contract, and they offered me an extension with a nice pay raise for what we did in the season, and I signed it, so I had two years [left on my deal].

“Grant Kelley (36ers owner), Nick Barbato (36ers CEO) and Matt Weston (36ers GM) always treated me really well, but this was just more of a family decision.

"It started with my son, [who was] not sure if he wanted to come back. Then it was like 'wow, okay, what do we want to do, what do we want to accomplish the next couple of years, and where do we see ourselves'.

"[At the end of the day] we just wanted to be closer to family."

Since making the decision to stay in the US, Wells has joined Ohio State University as an assistant coach.

Upon reflecting on his two seasons in the City of Churches, in which he had a 41-30 record, Wells takes great pride in what the team achieved.

"I'm super proud of that team, and the opportunity to coach those guys was special," he said.

"We really tried to just reset the 36ers. The goal was to try to build a sustainable system, build a culture and create a professional environment that everybody enjoyed working in every day, and I think we did that.”
