Melbourne United will chase a fourth straight win on Saturday night when they host the resurgent Brisbane Bullets at John Cain Arena.
It’s a clash between two of the League’s hottest teams, and a reunion between a star and his former coach.
United’s Chris Goulding played under Bullets mentor Will Weaver at Paris Basketball in 2023, and he still looks back on that time fondly.
“That was really one of my most enjoyable stints overseas,” Goulding said.
“I love his approach to building relationships with his team and how you feel as a player when you go out and play for him.
“[He’s got the Bullets] rejuvenated. They’re playing with a lot of juice. They’re playing for each other, great energy.
“We got to play that game of chess a little bit [on Saturday].”
Saturday will be the Olympic medallist’s third game back after recovering from a calf issue.
One of the keys to United extending their winning run and continuing their ascent up the ladder is Cole Anthony.
While much has been made of his relationship with the referees, Goulding has backed his NBA-level teammate to deliver another strong performance.
“I’m one of the worst offenders [when it comes to officials]. What am I gonna go do? Hey, do what I do,” he added.
“If you completely took that away from him, he’d be a completely different basketballer.
“He is a phenomenally talented basketball player who can go out and win games for us.
“It’s not just a work in progress with just Cole in regards to the emotion. It is for us as a group.”
Goulding is also well aware that, with the competition so tight, United can’t afford to turn up underpreapared.
“I don’t even really know who’s where on the ladder, but I think if you fall into the trap of, they’re below us on the ladder, we’ll beat them, you’re gonna get your ass kicked,” he said.
“We’ve shown, unfortunately, in games this year that if we take our foot off the gas, we’re gettable.
“If you’re not urgent and want it more than the other team, you’re behind the eight ball already.”
Saturday’s clash tips off at 7.30pm AEDT, live on ESPN and 9Go!
