Sotto's homecoming gets the hero's ending

Former Adelaide 36er Kai Sotto delivered a hero moment for the Philippines in their FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier on Friday, marking his first appearance for the national team in almost two years.

With time expiring, Sotto swatted away Abdullah Olajuwon's attempted game-winner, sending the Philippines' home crowd into pandemonium.

The victory over Jordan kept the Gilas' World Cup hopes alive, as they most to a 3-4 record in Group E, breaking a four-game losing run.  

Sotto finished with 18 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks in the memorable win.  

"It was fantastic. It was fun to be a part of. It was fun to be on this side of it, winning. I know how tough it is - against New Zealand we were on the other side of it, in an overtime game," Head Coach Tim Cone said post-game.  

Sotto and the Philippines now take on Iran on Sunday night, hoping to keep their FIBA World Cup dream alive with another victory.

During his time in the NBL, Sotto averaged 7.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game across two seasons with the Adelaide 36ers. He also won two Fans MVP Awards.
