Pepper labelled a "world-class scorer" after record night

Australian Boomers coach Jacob Chance has labelled Elijah Pepper a "world-class scorer" after the guard's history-making 32-point performance against Syria on Friday night.

Pepper's scoring haul is the highest tally ever recorded by a Boomer in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers history, headlining a dominant 123-64 win for Australia in the Philippines.

The Perth Wildcats star was scorching from deep, shooting 8-from-12 from three-point range, with his 32 points coming in just 20 minutes on the floor.

"He's a world-class scorer. He's shown it everywhere he's played, whether it be in the NBL back home or his New Zealand season that he just had at Wellington," Chance said post-game.

Chance, who has taken over as Melbourne United's head coach this season, praised Pepper's impact at both ends of the floor.

"I loved his approach to his defence tonight. I thought he picked up full court and bought into the disruption that the whole team showed, and that allowed him to go out on the other end offensively and play with the freedom that, when you see him at his best, he's obviously an elite shot-maker.

"He lets the game come to him too, which is great ... [it was] another great performance for him in the group stage."

Chance was delighted with the Boomers' balanced scoring output, with 10 of the 11 players who featured finishing with eight points or more.

The NBL's fingerprints were all over the squad, with Nick Kay the only player not currently rostered to a local team this year.

Brisbane Bullet Max Mackinnon and Perth's Anthony Dell'Orso made their debuts in the green and gold, impressing first-up.

"It was awesome to celebrate them during the week and present them with their first jerseys this morning ... I thought both came in and impacted the game in different ways," Chance continued.

"You saw Max kind of grow defensively as the game went on, and Delly ... elite shot-maker, he found his ability to score there a little bit too.

"But it always speaks testament to the work that's done by a lot of the lower levels in our federation, our national frameworks, and how much junior talent is coming through for us. To see two more junior players make their debut was awesome tonight."

Australia backs up against Jordan on Sunday evening, hoping to keep top spot and their unbeaten record intact in the race for World Cup qualification.

Chance spoke to the Boomers' depth, flagging plans to keep spreading opportunities across the roster.

"We really feel like we're 12 deep with the guys we brought over here, so we feel really comfortable being able to play all those guys at any given moment," he added.
