South East Melbourne coach Josh King has called John Brown III a "monster on defence" after another strong showing during Wednesday's win over Cairns.

South East Melbourne found themselves down by as many as 11 points in Wednesday's clash with Cairns, before ultimately winning by 15.

A big part of that comeback, which helped the Phoenix avoid a second straight loss, was the defensive play of import John Brown III.

During the victory, Brown recorded five steals, one block and numerous other deflections, which led to high praise from his coach.

"I've said it before, John Brown III is a monster on defence," Josh King said during Wednesday's post-game press conference.

"We always feel, regardless of all the good players around the league, whoever John Brown's guarding, it's advantageous [for us].

"No offence to whoever he's guarding. He's just that good on defence. A lot of credit to JB."

Echoing his coach was Jordi Hunter, who believes Brown has helped unlock new parts of his game in NBL26, including his three-point shooting.

"He anchors our defence so well and his communication on and off the court has just been such a great piece to have for our club, but also the league," Hunter said.

"He just plays with such a tenacity that it's exciting to watch.

"He's just so great on both ends of the floor, it's helping put me in positions to best succeed on the court, including as a shooter, which has been a cool addition to my game of late."

The Phoenix, who are 14-7 on the ladder, next travel to Qudos Bank Arena on Monday to face the red-hot Sydney Kings from 7.30pm AEDT, live on ESPN.
