Cotton's wait is over as Boomers debut beckons

Bryce Cotton says making his Boomers debut in Perth is a special full-circle moment after years of waiting.

A jet-lagged Bryce Cotton is embracing his full-circle moment as he prepares to make his long-awaited Boomers debut in Perth.
Cotton will be the No.1 attraction when the Boomers take on world No.77 Guam on Friday night and world No.36 Philippines on Monday in a pair of FIBA World Cup qualifiers at RAC Arena.
The moment has been years in the making for American-born Cotton, whose dream to become an Aussie was initially quashed in 2021 when the Australian government deemed he had been in the country illegally, because he spent 15 minutes in a waiting room while authorities were changing over his visa status.
That ordeal cost Cotton the chance to play for Australia at the 2024 Olympics, but he finally received his citizenship in September and the 33-year-old will line up in the green and gold for the first time on Friday night.
Cotton sees it fitting that his Boomers debut will be in Perth - a place where the superstar guard's Australian journey began with the Wildcats in December 2016.
"This is where it all started for me, so it's a full-circle moment," Cotton said on Thursday.
"I started my career in Perth and I'm starting my debut Boomers career in Perth, so it's pretty cool.
"It's an honour to be representing a country that you're not from, and to be able to represent that country in said country is crazy - very special.
"It's surreal that the moment is here."
During a decorated NBL career that has netted six MVPs, Cotton has become accustomed to playing almost entire games - and dominating in the process.
But given he only touched down in Australia from the US several days ago, Cotton is set to be eased into things against Guam on Friday night.
"It's been a whirlwind. The jet lag is crazy as well," Cotton said.
"It's all a big blur right now."
Cotton's presence in the green and gold is a huge boost for Australia ahead of next year's World Cup in Qatar and the 2028 LA Olympics.
But with the Boomers only allowed to have one naturalised player in their squad, coach Adam Caporn will face a tough decision down the track about whether to select Cotton or NBA forward Matisse Thybulle.
"Everyone's trying out," Caporn said.
"They know the situation with that. It's not something we discuss right now, just like I don't discuss with other players, 'here are the other people in your position'.
"They know those things, everyone's trying out, and it's part of the cool thing about being Australian - everyone comes into it equally in my opinion.
"We're excited to have some difficult choices in the future."
Caporn said he will dig into the squad's depth for the two World Cup qualifiers in Perth.
Future NBA star Alex Condon will make his Boomers debut in Perth, with Cleveland Cavaliers guard Tyrese Proctor the only one of Australia's established NBA players selected in the 12-player squad.
