Brisbane Bullets basketball GM Sam Mackinnon has confirmed the club will sign an import point guard for the new season.

Brisbane Bullets basketball GM Sam Mackinnon has confirmed the club will sign an import point guard for the new season.

With the Bullets still having all three import spots available, Mackinnon has identified the point guard as a top priority.

He also added an import forward in the mould of Best Defensive Player, Antonius Cleveland, is on Brisbane’s agenda.

“We are definitely going to get an import point guard. The trick is, you’re always looking for those players that have the selflessness and how they can make others better,” Mackinnon said.

“(Nathan) Sobey can score, the import point guard can score, the (forward) import … do we need them all to score, probably not. It’s the balance of finding the (forward) import that has some of the skills that Cleveland brought to Illawarra.”

Mackinnon will attend the NBA Summer League this month to assess import options, calling the event a “key” in the club’s roster construction.

The Bullets have had success finding superstars and bringing them to the NBL, including Vic Law and Robert Franks, but have struggled with player retention.

With new owners on deck, Mackinnon is hoping Brisbane can start holding onto their star imports.

“With the ownership now being there, we can look to build long term deals, not just one and dones,” he said.

The Bullets have signed Sobey, Jason Cadee, Tanner Krebs, DJ Mitchell, Tyrell Harrison, Harry Froling, Kody Stattmann and Lual Diing (development player) for the 22/23 season.
