Brantley "Rejuvenated" After Breakers Run

After 41 games in the NBA, and a career that’s taken him through Russia, the NBA G-League and Summer League and Puerto Rico, Jarrell Brantley hit the shores of New Zealand off the back of almost three years of constant basketball.

The forward has shown just why he’s such a highly sought after prospect around the globe in his debut NBL campaign, and the 26-year-old has become a crucial cog in the Breakers machine that has rolled into the NBL Championship Series.

He was one of a number of new faces to enter the Breakers’ program in NBL23. Fellow imports Barry Brown Jr and Dererk Pardon, NBL veteran Cam Gliddon and homegrown talents Tom Vodanovich and Izayah Le’Afa all came into the ranks.

Now, Vodanovich and club captain Tom Abercrombie excluded, every player on the roster is competing for their first ever NBL title.

“This season has kind of rejuvenated me,” Brantley told Stuff.co.nz. “If you did a poll with the rest of our team I think they would all say the same.

“This season has given us a new sense of life, for basketball, for family and for friends.

“This group is just special. Winning is the ultimate goal but even if you take that out, this is a situation and group you’ll never be able to get back and might not ever be able to remake in your life.

“It doesn’t matter if we win or we lose. It’s over. So just enjoying that last bit of time you have with your guys is the most important thing.”

Brantley’s one-on-one matchup with newly crowned MVP and reigning Grand Final MVP Xavier Cooks looms as one of the most mouth-watering and engaging battles to emerge out of the upcoming series.

Cooks has established himself as a genuine NBA prospect over the course of this season, and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility to predict he and Brantley could be battling for the same NBA opportunities come season’s end.

“He’s good,” Brantley said of the Kings’ star forward. “He does a lot of different things well. His versatility is who he is, and he’s found a way to maximise it. He’s definitely a dope player.

“Players like that, they’ll show up. He stuffs the stat-sheet and does a lot of different things to impact the game, but we do it by committee.

“If you look at the year I think the two best teams are in the [Championship Series]. Now it’s just go play basketball. It’s the fun part now.”
