A "cherry on top" in Froling's remarkable comeback

Monday, July 7, 2025

"To have his NBL opportunity be at my club, is just kind of the cherry on top and super special."

The last time Harry Froling featured in an NBL game was on the 21st of January 2023, when he had 14 points and nine rebounds in a win over the Illawarra Hawks.

That was the same time the former Rookie of the Year’s life changed forever, with a one-punch attack that left him requiring emergency surgery to evacuate bleeding in his brain.

It’s been over two years since that horrific night and the remarkable comeback story is almost complete, with ESPN reporting the 27-year-old signing a two-year deal to join his brother Sam at the Hawks.

“This is special. I’m so happy for him, he has worked so hard to get this opportunity,” Sam Froling told the Illawarra Mercury.

“For (the family), Harry being healthy was a massive relief; we weren’t even thinking about basketball, but when he made the comeback, that was really special.”

Froling has previously touched on his extensive rehabilitation process, from learning to walk again to being given clearance to get back on the basketball court.

At the back end of the NBL25 season he joined his brother Sam in Illawarra to practice with the team as he worked away at his goal of a remarkable comeback.

After a strong stint in the NZNBL, Froling joined the Melbourne Tigers in the NBL1 South and continued his impressive form, which was enough to secure the next step in this incredible story.

"To have his NBL opportunity be at my club is just kind of the cherry on top and super special,” Sam added. "He's talented, and he deserves to be here."
