Six rounds in, the JackJumpers sit on top of the NBL, and at the heart of it is a captain playing arguably the best basketball of his career.
Speaking on Nothing But Net, Will Magnay credited the island and the culture built at the JackJumpers as what makes it all come together.
“It’s the way we can develop every day and continue to grow,” he said.
“And you’re coached really heavily… it’s just the impact that they can have on your career is massive and it has been for me.”
Magnay became a free agent when NBL26 ended, and despite plenty of rumours swirling about the Olympian’s future, he says there is no place he’d rather be.
“The city, man, the city is unbelievable,” he said of Hobart.
“I saw a quote somewhere about how it’s the fastest way to slow down.
“It’s sort of a big country town, everyone knows everyone. The love that the fans show and the sponsors etc.
“I’ve never really wanted to be anywhere else, and I don’t think I’ll ever end up playing anywhere else in the NBL… this is just my home.”
The 28-year-old has endured some tough injuries and setbacks throughout an already very successful career, and with his eyes firmly fixed on helping bring Tasmania another championship and then the World Cup, he believes he has found his secret formula.
“I think getting away from basketball is hugely important,” he said.
“I’ve spent a lot of time trying to build a really nice escape from it.
“I’ve got a beautiful fiancée, a dog and a beautiful home and sort of not much basketball stuff around there.
“So when I leave work, I’m done and I really just try [to] get out and enjoy some restaurants, take the dog for a walk and enjoy my life outside of it.”
The JackJumpers’ Round 7 clash with the Kings at the Silverdome in Launceston tips off at 7.30pm AEDT on Friday night, live on ESPN.
