Rillie Set for Extended Perth Stay

Wednesday, May 17, 2023
"To be locked in for another couple years allows the Wildcats and myself to shape the franchise moving forward."
John Rillie looks set for an extended stay in Perth, with the club picking up the third-year team option on his contract.
The option will see Rillie remain as head coach of the side until at least the end of NBL25 following his inaugural campaign in charge in NBL23.
Rillie arrived at the Wildcats off the back of a successful playing career in the NBL, as well as assistant coaching jobs in both the American collegiate system and with the Boomers.
“To be locked in for another couple years allows the Wildcats and myself to shape the franchise moving forward, the roster build over this offseason is allowing for success now and into the future with the youth we have added,” Rillie said.
“I have enjoyed all that comes along with being the Perth Wildcats head coach and I will certainly be better prepared going into my second year and having come back to the NBL, I feel the players and club have some continuity for the first time in the last few years.”
“In continuing to evolve the organization both on and off the court, this early extension for John is a clear statement of our trust in him and the pillars he is building to get this program to the next level,” General Manager of Basketball Operations Danny Mills added.
“We are all aligned as to the direction we are taking the club and are thrilled that John will be leading this team long into the future.”
After missing the post-season for the first time in over three decades in the season prior to Rillie’s arrival, the former NBL Scoring Champion guided the club to a sixth-place finish.
After suffering Play-In elimination at the hands of the Cairns Taipans, Rillie and the Wildcats have embarked on a roster rebuild heading into next season, and have acquired the services of Keanu Pinder, David Okwera, Hyrum Harris, Ben Henshall and Next Star Alexandre Sarr.
The signings of Pinder, Okwera and Henshall will see the trio return to their home state for the upcoming season.
“I love the additions of youth and local WA flavour, along with the experienced players returning,” Rillie said.
“This blend should allow us to grow throughout the season, both as a team and as individuals and I’m excited for the ceiling of this team.”
Perth's first game for the upcoming NBL24 season is slated for Friday, September 29 against the Tasmania JackJumpers.
