NBL Abroad: Mitchell Closing in on Polish Title Shot

Just because the NBL is in its off-season, it doesn't mean the best players in the league are resting on their laurels and taking a break.

Stars of the Australian domestic competition are now competing all over the globe and getting important reps in ahead of NBL24.

Emerging NBL forward pair DJ Mitchell and Sam Waardenburg each played crucial roles in their respective side’s playoff campaigns this week, with the pair registering two of their top individual performances when it mattered most.

Mitchell – who is currently playing in the semi-finals for the Polish Basketball League – has inched one step closer to the Championship Series, courtesy of two strong wins over powerhouse side Legia Warsaw, and Wroclaw Slask lead their best of three series 2-0.

He dropped 14 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks in the second clash between the sides – a 14-point win for his Slask side.

Should Slask overcome Legia in the third game of the series, which is set to be played on Friday morning AEST, they will take on either King Szczecin or Stal Ostrow in the finals. King Szczecin currently leads the series 2-0.

Waardenburg’s Riesen Ludwigsburg has swept Oldenburg to earn a place in the German Basketball Bundesliga semi-finals, where they’ll take on the top seeded Bonn.

After struggling to influence proceedings in Game 1, Waardenburg proved a decisive influence on the second game of the series with 14 points in a one-point victory for Ludwigsburg.

He also added five points in the series-winning Game 3, which Ludwigsburg won by 14 points.

The Taipans forward will come up against a familiar face in the upcoming series against Bonn. Former New Zealand Breaker Finn Delany has represented the top seeded side 47 times in all competitions this season.

Jo Lual-Acuil Jr has experienced a strong start – both individually and as a collective – to the title series in Lebanon, with his Dynamo side defeating Duop Reath’s Al Riyadi by nine points.

Lual-Acuil Jr added 25 points and 14 rebounds to the win, while Reath added a game-high 32 points.

The result is a far cry from when the two teams last met, when Reath’s Al Riyadi emerged as 35-point victors.
