Giddey claims World Cup Rising Star

Josh Giddey has beaten out the likes of Nikola Jovic, Paolo Banchero, Usman Garuba, Juan Nunez and Jean Montero to claim the FIBA World Cup Rising Star.

Star Australian Boomer Josh Giddey has become the first recipient of the newly minted Rising Star Award, following an impressive FIBA World Cup campaign.

Giddey averaged 19.4 points, 6.0 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game for his country across the tournament, despite the Boomers being knocked out earlier than most expected.

He led Australia in points and assists per game, and still at just 20 years old, has an incredibly bright future at international level.

Giddey beat out the likes of Nikola Jovic, Paolo Banchero, Usman Garuba, Juan Nunez and Jean Montero to claim the award.

His best outing came against Japan, with 26 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, a performance which saw him handed the Player of the Game.

The former NBL Next Star is one of the most exciting young players in the NBA, where he won the league's Rookie of the Year in 2021, representing Oklahoma City Thunder.

The selection criteria for the Wanda Rising Star Award was that candidates must be 21 years old or younger (born 2002 or after) and play a minimum of 4 games in the competition. Candidates were selected based on individual performances and the wider impact on their respective teams.
