Melbourne United has begun what looms as a hectic off-season of signings

Melbourne United has begun what looms as a hectic off-season of signings by inking exciting collegiate talent Flynn Cameron to a three-year deal.

Cameron – who spent last season representing UC Riverside alongside new Illawarra signing Lachlan Olbrich – played 123 games over his collegiate career with the school, and averaged 13.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists over the course of this season.

In his final game for Riverside he dropped 31 points with six assists in a five-point loss to UC Santa Barbara.

The explosive guard will begin his professional career with extensive international experience - having starred with the Tall Black at the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup.

"I was just super excited to have Melbourne interested," Cameron said. "Knowing who we have as a coach - coach Dean (Vickerman) - I've seen him throughout the NZNBL and the NBL. He coached my dad in the NZNBL.

"I thought that was pretty cool to have the opportunity to play for him. It's a bit of a full circle moment."

"Flynn Cameron is someone we've been watching for a number of years in college," Vickerman added.

"He’s a combo guard that’s big and strong at 6’5. We love his strength, he’s a good athlete that we believe will be able to sit down in a stance and defend multiple positions and shoot the basketball at a really high level.

"Any environment you put him in, he has the ability to rise to the next level. What he’s done in college, he’s just continued to get better every year. With our success with signing guys out of college recently with Jack White and Mason Peatling, we’ve seen the benefit and the growth that have come from those deals.”

Cameron has joined contracted Shea Ili, Chris Goulding, Ariel Hukporti, Josh Duach and Zac Triplett on Melbourne United’s roster for NBL24.
