The Brisbane Bullets have announced the club has exercised its option to retain exciting forward DJ Mitchell for NBL24.

The Brisbane Bullets have announced the club has exercised its option to retain exciting forward DJ Mitchell for NBL24.

Mitchell, who made his NBL debut this season, was a shining light in what was a disappointing campaign for the club.

He played 27 of a possible 28 games for the side across the season and averaged just under 10 points and five rebounds per appearance.

“It’s exciting for the club to re-sign DJ after a promising rookie year,” head coach Justin Schueller said.

“He’s a competitor that just wants to win, which was a big reason for us returning him.

“DJ will be a key piece in our new look Bullets. His ability to shoot the ball from three and stretch defence out is a key, but I also look forward to his growth at the defensive end.”

Mitchell, son of former Gold Coast, Brisbane and North Melbourne import Mike, began his professional career with BAL in the Netherlands before linking up with the Gold Coast Rollers in NBL1.

He says he’s excited to try and help turn the club’s fortunes around after a difficult season.

“I really enjoyed playing in front of the Brisbane fans and I look forward to getting back on court, competing and doing my part to bring success to this club.

Mitchell’s extension has been announced after several off-court moves made by the Bullets early into their off-season.

New head coach Justin Schueller and new assistant Darryl McDonald have crossed from Melbourne United, while assistants Peter Crawford and Pero Cameron have left the club.

Club legend Sam Mackinnon has also been released from his General Manager of Basketball position.

Mitchell joins Olympians Nathan Sobey and Aron Baynes as being under contract for Brisbane ahead of NBL24.
