Browne re-signs for second South East Melbourne season

Thursday, July 27, 2023

Gary Browne will return to South East Melbourne for NBL24.

South East Melbourne is bringing back at least two of its three imports from NBL23, following the re-signing of Puerto Rican international Gary Browne on a one-year deal.

Browne has been representing Baloncesto Superior Nacional side Mets de Guaynabo alongside Mitch Creek this NBL off-season, with the pair leading the Puerto Rican side to the semi-finals of the competition.

He endured something of an injury-struck debut campaign in the NBL and played 20 of a possible 29 games for the Phoenix last season.

He averaged 12.2 points, 6.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game as South East Melbourne suffered post-season elimination at the hands of the Perth Wildcats in the competition’s first ever Play-In Qualifier.

Fellow NBL23 import Alan Williams signed a two-year extension with the club before the culmination of last season.

"I am ecstatic to be coming back to Melbourne and the Phoenix," Browne said.

"We have unfinished business - especially after our season ended abruptly in the Play-In Qualifier. I loved my time at the club last season and cannot wait to get going for this season.

"Playing with Mitch (Creek) in Puerto Rico recently definitely helped with the decision to return. It's a different look in terms of players and coaches for this upcoming season, but I am excited to meet everyone and get down to business."

"I am excited to have Gary back with the Phoenix," head coach Mike Kelly added.

"Gary competes every day and plays to win. His intensity and ability to make others better will be huge for this group.

"I'm looking forward to getting to know Gary and how he thinks of the game. It will be fun being in the same huddle instead of scouting against him."

Browne has joined Mitch Creek, Alan Williams, Owen Foxwell, Reuben Te Rangi and Owen Foxwell in returning to the Phoenix next season, while Austin Rapp, Ben Ayre, Gorjok Gak, Matt Kenyon and Rhys Vague have all been confirmed as new signings.
