SKY Sport New Zealand Breakers star Corey Webster has revealed the gruesome details of the hand injury he suffered while cutting an avocado.

Reports surfaced over the weekend that Webster sustained the injury in an unusual fashion. Speaking on NBL Overtime with his right hand in a cast, the 32-year-old lifted the lid on his unfortunate night in the kitchen.

“The way I usually cut it (the avocado) wasn’t working so I got a little bit frustrated and I just tried to stick the knife straight through the pit of the avocado and the pit split open and it (the knife) just went all the way through the palm of my hand and then out the other side of my hand,” Webster said.

“It was pretty crazy. I’ve never had an injury like this before.

“I had to have surgery to reconnect the nerve, I severed the nerve in my palm, one of my fingers is still numb and that feeling won’t come back for a little while.

“I was lucky to miss tendons and ligaments and bones…it slipped through the perfect position really to go through my hand.”

When asked about his reaction when he saw the knife sticking out of his hand, Webster explained the shock his body went into.

“I didn’t really realise it was on the other side, I guess I went into shock and I just pulled it out straight away,” he said.

“I just rushed and grabbed a towel, wrapped it around and squeezed it as hard as I could just to stop the blood. I called our trainer and he came to the room and he said he needed to check it out.

“When we were looking at it, I turned my hand over and then that’s when I realised it had gone all the way through because there was a cut on the backside of my hand.

“Then I went into shock and I was sweating like I was in a game. There was blood everywhere.

“It actually didn’t hurt because I severed the nerve, so I couldn’t really feel it, but I was just in shock. The next thing I know I was on the way to the hospital.”

In more positive news, Webster did say he is well on the road to recovery and he is hoping he doesn’t miss too much of NBL21.

“The hand is good, it is healing up well. I had a successful surgery to reconnect the nerves and the artery in my hand. I am healing up now,” Webster said.

“I get the stitches out this week and then I can start rehab on my hand. It should only be another three weeks. I’m going to push the limit as we do as athletes to try and get back on the court.

“I’m hoping another two weeks, I don’t want to miss any games, especially don’t want to miss the start of the season.

“When I saw the surgeon after the surgery, they told me another three to four weeks. It shouldn’t be any longer than that.”
