NBL update on Taipans v Phoenix game

Tuesday, December 19, 2023

With the closure of Cairns Airport, the NBL provides an update on the status of Friday's Taipans v Phoenix game.

The NBL is aware of the flooding in Cairns and the current closure of Cairns Airport.

The Cairns Taipans and South East Melbourne Phoenix are scheduled to play at the Cairns Convention Centre on Friday night.

“Arrangements have been made for the Taipans to stay and train in Brisbane, after their game with the Bullets yesterday. They will remain there until the airport opens,” NBL Executive General Manager of Competitions and Operations, Sean Gottliebsen, said.

“We are working closely with Qantas and both clubs on flight options. Safety of our players, coaches, staff and fans remains the number one priority.

“Early indications are that we will be able to proceed with the game, but at all times, we will be guided by the experts on if it’s safe to travel into Cairns.

“Our thoughts go out to those who’ve been affected by both Tropical Cyclone Jasper and the resulting flooding throughout Cairns and the surrounding regions.”
