NBL explains late decision in JackJumpers/Phoenix clash

The end of the thrilling Round 1 clash between Tasmania and South East Melbourne at MyState Bank Arena featured numerous big moments.

From David Johnson scoring five points in the final minute and a half, to Nick Marshall's clutch floater late in the piece, the game had plenty of memorable plays for the victorious JackJumpers.

Another big moment, which left some fans scratching their heads, involved Phoenix guard Skylar Mays with 32 seconds left on the clock.

South East Melbourne teammate D'Shawn Schwartz first stole the ball off Marshall, before the latter committed a 'Disruptive Foul', which is part of the new rules brought in by FIBA for the Hungry Jack's NBL27 Season.

Down 91-89, the Phoenix were awarded two free throws and possession of the ball. But instead of Schwartz stepping up to take the shots, Mays headed to the line and proceeded to take a free throw.

As such, under the new rulings, the original call was cancelled, handing the JackJumpers the ball while up two points.

Soon after, Marshall hit his clutch shot and Player of the Game David Johnson iced the game with three shots from the charity stripe.

NBL's Head of Referees Scott Butler addressed the play following the game.

"On the free throw incident, rule 45.4.3 applies where the wrong player attempts a free throw," Butler said.

"The free throw is cancelled, and the ball is awarded to the opposition for a throw-in from the free-throw line extended, which is what occurred.

"The incorrect player (Mays) went to the line independently, rather than being directed there by officials.

"Had officials instructed the wrong player to shoot, it could have been corrected.

"Once the player attempted the free throw, however, rule 45.4.3 applied and the outcome could not be undone.

"There was also no review mechanism available in the final two minutes to alter that ruling."

Tasmania, who won the game 96-91, now travel to Cairns to face the Taipans on Wednesday, while the Phoenix host Melbourne United in the 33rd Throwdown at John Cain Arena.
