NBL Abroad - The Top Off-Season Linkups

Basketball doesn't stop. Just because NBL23 has been done and dusted for a couple months doesn't mean some of the stars of the competition haven't been flexing their wares all around the world.

There are some instances all across the globe though where foes have become friends. Those who faced off across the floor in the NBL have linked up overseas to try take their teams to glory.

NBL Media looks at some of the top NBL off-season linkups following the conclusion of NBL23.

Milton Doyle and Brady Manek at Tofas SK – Turkish Superlig, Turkey

Import pair Milton Doyle and Brady Manek finished their NBL23 seasons as two of the most in-form players in the competition.

Doyle became the first JackJumper ever to earn All-NBL First Team honours and came within one quarter of leading his side to its second straight Championship Series appearance, while Manek hit the level of quality fans were expecting from day one to become Bryce Cotton's primary running mate in Perth's bid to make the post-season.

Manek appeared in 13 games for Tofas while Doyle played 12 times and, alongside former NBA guard Tyler Ennis, they earned a place in the post-season as the seventh seed.

However, they suffered defeat to  former Cairns guard Scottie Wilbekin and Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce in the playoff quarter finals.

Antonius Cleveland and Mangok Mathiang at Hapoel Eilat – Israeli Basketball Premier League, Israel

It had been far too long since Mangok Mathiang had played at the top level before entering NBL23. Injuries had kept the former Charlotte Hornet sidelined from the professional game for almost two years.

Once he got his feet under him at NBL level though, he proved to be a consistent contributor off the bench for Illawarra and showed flashes of the quality that initially led him to an NBA floor.

He left the Hawks before the end of their NBL23 regular season for an opportunity in Israel, and has been dominating the paint for Hapoel Eilat ever since.

Just one game into his tenure he was joined by back-to-back NBL Defensive Player of the Year and Adelaide import Antonius Cleveland.

Mathiang played 11 games in total for Eilat – who failed to make the playoffs – and averaged 11.1 points, 13.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game.

Within his time in Israel he pulled together one of the most exceptional games played by an Australian at any level around the world this year. He dropped an incredible 22 points, 24 rebounds and five blocks in an 11-point win over Hapoel Holon.

Cleveland finished his time in Israel as the competition’s Slam Dunk Contest champion, and across his 11 appearances averaged 17.6 points and 1.8 steals per game.

The pair won six of the ten games they played together – including a four-game winning run through mid to late March.

Barry Brown Jr and TaShawn Thomas at Metropolitans 92 – LNB Pro A, France

Victor Wembanyama and Bilal Coulibaly may be earning most of the press coming out of Metropolitans 92 and the French LNB Pro A due to their status as high-level NBA prospects, but as the likely most watched club in France embarks on their playoff campaign, a pair of NBL23 import stars will be right in the thick of it.

TaShawn Thomas arrived in the NBL off the back of an exceptional season with Le Mans in the same competition, and was named to the LNB Pro A All-First Team in 2022. Almost as soon as his NBL campaign ended with Perth he headed back to France to link up with Metropolitans.

He’s made 15 appearances for the club so far - largely starting alongside Wembanyama at the power forward position - and has averaged 10.9 points and five rebounds per game en route to a second place finish in the regular season.

The side elected to add some scoring punch ahead of the post-season, so Barry Brown Jr was brought onto the roster ahead of the club's final game of the regular season – which, incidentally, was against Chris Goulding and Will Weaver’s Paris Basketball.

A 2-1 series victory over Cholet - the former employers of new Sydney signing DJ Hogg - means Thomas, Brown Jr and Metropolitans will meet Donatas Motiejunas and ASVEL in the semi-finals.

They have already hit the front in the series with a 75-69 victory in Game 1.

Tim Soares, Mitch Creek and Gary Browne at Mets de Guaynabo – Baloncesto Superior Nacional, Puerto Rico

Mitch Creek and Gary Browne headed to Browne’s home country of Puerto Rico at the end of the NBL season, and just weeks later they were joined by championship winning centre Tim Soares.

While Manek, Doyle, Thomas and Brown Jr are all getting stuck into post-season basketball, there are still 10 games left in the regular season of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional – and the NBL trio’s Mets side is currently clinging to the final playoff spot in Group B.

NBL23 MVP nominee Creek bregan his stint in Puerto Rico on fire, but after 15 games in his first month he was sidelined with a shoulder injury.

He has hit the ground running since he returned to the court though, and across his 19 appearances he's averaged 20 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game.

Browne has now played more games for Mets as he did for South East Melbourne – and his numbers are comparable – however he’s shooting at a dramatically better three-point clip in Puerto Rico.

Across his 22 games he has averaged 14.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game, and has become a genuine triple-double threat playing alongside Soares and former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins.

The NBL champion’s addition to this Guaynabo side helped push a 180 degree change in form for the post-season chasing side.

After beginning the season with a rancid 1-8 record, Soares’ addition saw the side break out on a five-game winning run, and they’ve won 13 of the 17 games he’s featured in.

So strong has Soares’ form been, in fact, that he’s been keeping DeMarcus Cousins on the bench.

He’s averaging 16.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game so far this season for Mets.
