Tuesday, July 18, 2023

The 2023 NBA Summer League is drawing to a close, but there were still a number of NBL names to follow in the final day of league-wide action.

Melbourne’s Luke Travers will be competing for the NBA Summer League’s biggest prize on Tuesday, after the Cleveland draftee played a key role in the Cavaliers reaching the competition’s championship game.

Cleveland overcame the Brooklyn Nets 102-99 in an overtime thriller to place themselves within touching distance of the title, and Travers starred with a crucial double-double.

The former Perth forward played almost 35 minutes in the decisive game and ended with 11 points and 12 rebounds – five of which came on the offensive end.

He also finished the game with a remarkable four blocks and one steal.

The Cavaliers will face the Houston Rockets in the tournament’s finale.

Incoming Hawks guard Hyunjung Lee and former Kings Next Star Makur Maker both earned good burn in Philadelphia’s high scoring victory over Dyson Daniels and the New Orleans Pelicans.

Lee scored ten points for the game. He hit three of his four shots – all from three – and converted his solitary free throw in the contest.

Maker added five points and four rebounds in the three-point win.

Despite being on the losing side, Daniels once again impressed for the Pelicans, and continued his run of strong form that proved him to be a class above much of the competition.

He completed the game within touching distance of a triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

Rayan Rupert and Duop Reath’s Portland side was easily dispatched by the Miami Heat, who cruised to a 26-point win largely behind the performance of Orlando Robinson.

Reath scored 18 points in 18 minutes in the defeat, and also added six rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Former Next Star Rayan Rupert started the game and finished with six points and three rebounds.

NBL23 Perth import Brady Manek rounded out his Summer League with a solid personal showing against Dallas, despite his Atlanta Hawks falling to the Mavericks by 20 points.

Manek added 11 points and four rebounds in the loss.

Mojave King faced off with former South East Melbourne guard Keifer Sykes when Indiana plaeyed Detroit this morning, and it was Sykes and the Pistons who had the last laugh.

Detroit emerged as 15-point winners – largely behind the 40-point performance of number 25 draft pick Marcus Sasser.

Sykes scored six points on 100 per cent shooting for the Pistons, while King scored two points for the Pacers.

The NBA Summer League championship game between Cleveland and Houston is the final game of the tournament and will be played on Tuesday morning at 11am AEST.
