Being at the head of an elite sporting organisation can take its toll and it's a reality Melbourne United coach Dean Vickerman knows only too well.

Sitting in the uncomfortable position of 9th on the ladder, Vickerman has had to deal with more than a disappointing 5-10 record.

Big injuries to Shea Ili and Ariel Hukporti, an import conundrum and inconsistent performances paled into insignificance compared to Isaac Humphries' mental health revelation.

“Seeing those two guys (Ili and Hukporti) in those difficult places and then, what tipped me over a little bit, was when Ice (Humphries) came to me and talked to me about how he considered taking his life,” Vickerman told The Herald Sun.

Vickerman spoke about the pressures affecting his home-life, and how he was bringing bad energy into the family environment.

“That was the trigger for me — when your wife starts telling you to snap out of it,” he revealed.

Vickerman added he has a desire to help create a coaches’ association in Australian basketball.
