Wildcats make big play

"There’s only so many of those guys out there, but if we can land one, it gives us another high-level piece to push for a championship."

With a strong core already locked in, the Perth Wildcats are now hunting a marquee frontcourt star to complete their NBL26 roster.

The re-signings of Kristian Doolittle and Dylan Windler, along with the return of Sunday Dech, from the Adelaide 36ers, gives Perth a versatile foundation, and perhaps more importantly, the flexibility to chase high-end talent.

Bryce Cotton’s departure no doubt frees up money in the bank to secure a big man. Could a play at the likes of Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. or Yanni Wetzell be on the cards?

Either way, Mills is confident the Wildcats are on the right path.

“We’ve got foundational pieces, and if we get the right complementary ones around them, we’re in the window to compete for a title every year,” Wildcats GM of Basketball Operations Danny Mills told The Marketplace.

“Adding marquee local talent is massive in this league and that’s definitely a target.

“There’s only so many of those guys out there, but if we can land one, it gives us another high-level piece to push for a championship.”

Still, Perth’s recruiting approach is fluid and not limited to a big man. With an import slot still remaining following Cotton’s exit, Mills says the club is ready to pivot.

“If a marquee big doesn’t eventuate, we’ll explore other options … whether that’s a guard or a different type of contributor. But no doubt, that frontcourt piece is a key focus.”

Patience is key for the Wildcats, with “sustained success” front-of-mind. The NBA’s Summer League in July and European seasons winding to a close will be vital in finding the best available talent.

“We’re on their clock to an extent,” Mills admitted. “You’ve got to be ready—but also willing to wait.”

Cotton is irreplaceable, no one can deny that, but with some key stars locked away and a fresh approach, are the Wildcats one piece away from another serious title tilt?
