NBL legend Mark Worthington returned to the court last weekend with the Willetton Tigers in NBL1 West, doing “wonders” for the club.
Worthington is one of the greatest players in Australian basketball history, having played 333 NBL games for the Sydney Kings, South Dragons, Gold Coast Blaze, Melbourne Tigers/United and Cairns Taipans from 2005-2017.
After retiring in 2017, Worthington made a comeback last week and despite his modest stats, NBL1 West expert Greg Hire says the impact the four-time NBL First Team Member will make on Willetton goes beyond the numbers.
“Only had six (points) and three (rebounds) on the Friday night against Rockingham, but then 10 (points) against Cockburn,” Hire told the NBL1 Show.
“For me it was just that leadership and physicality. He definitely made his presence known.
“He set the tone and that’s what they need. Willetton have some veterans but also some young guys, but I think he’ll do wonders for that club.
“You’re not expecting him to put up massive numbers, but I think he’ll certainly make his impact.”
Worthington won an NBL championship with the Dragons in 2009 and represented Australia at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
Worthington will lead the Tigers tonight against the Lakeside Lightning at 8:30pm AWST and you can watch the game live on the NBL1 website or NBL1 app.
