Mangok Mathiang has departed the Illawarra Hawks for the remainder of NBL23, with the 30-year-old centre allowed to take up a playing opportunity overseas.

Mathiang – who represented the Charlotte Hornets in the 2017-18 NBA season – made his return to professional basketball this season with the Hawks after being sidelined for almost two years with a broken tibia and fibula in 2020.

He made his return to the court with the Casey Cavaliers in NBL1 South before going on to average over seven points and five rebounds per game across 25 appearances this season.

“While we are disappointed to lose a player and person of Mangok’s calibre, we are supportive of the opportunity to pursue his career internationally,” Hawks General Manager of Basketball Mat Campbell said.

“Mangok joined the club with the with a want to return to an elite level, and we are proud of the collective efforts of our staff to help him achieve that.

“He was a popular teammate and a fan favourite amongst our members and corporate partners, and we wish him all the best in his next endeavour.”

While encountering some struggles in the early part of the season, Mathiang continued to elevate his game as the campaign progressed. He saved his best performance in a Hawks uniform for the drought-breaking win over New Zealand – where he finished with 15 points and five rebounds.

He says he’s proud of his time playing for Illawarra.

“My time at the Hawks and with this group of guys has exceeded all my expectations,” Mathiang said.

“My coaches, teammates, ownership and all the staff have made my experience in the NBL memorable, which made this decision a difficult one.

“I want to thank the Hawk Nation and the people of Illawarra who continue to support us, and to everyone who made me feel so welcome.

Development player Lachie Dent has been elevated to the main roster for the remainder of the season in place of Mathiang, while local junior Harry Morris will be elevated as an injury replacement player for import Michael Frazier.

The Hawks have just three games remaining this season. They travel to Perth as a part of the NBL’s Champion Pride Round before hosting the Breakers and JackJumpers at the WIN Entertainment Centre.
