Returning New Zealand Breaker Will McDowell-White has shared the emotional reason behind re-signing under head coach Mody Maor.

Maor and McDowell-White have both thrived in their time at the Breakers, and there is no doubt their growth and development will continue after a fairytale run to the Championship Series last season.

McDowell-White said the relationship he has with coach Maor is what drove him back to the Breakers.

“I kind of joked with the guys and said last year, if we win, I’m coming back regardless. I just know Mody is the best guy for me right now,” McDowell-White said.

“We’ve built something pretty good over the last two and a half years and he’s probably the one guy I trust the most. He’s the first guy who’s really put that kind of effort into expanding my game for me and helping me be better.

“Just having that drive to make me the best I can be is something that I took to heart and took it very personally and I appreciate everything he’s done for me so far.”

McDowell-White signed with the Breakers in 2021 and was one of the hottest free agents this year, knocking back interest from almost every team.

Maor echoed McDowell-White’s comments and is happy to have the strong guard back on board, assuring the league they “mean business”.

“This is another sign to everybody that we mean business,” Maor said.

“Getting back Will sends the message that we’ve done things right in the past and everybody needs to know this.

“It sends the message that we have an ownership that really wants to compete and is throwing its weight behind us, without that Will doesn’t get done.

“It’s a great thing for us that he decided that this is the place for him to be. It’s a great sign coming to the future that every young talent, doesn’t matter where he’s from, knows that the Breakers is one of the best pathways to fulfil your potential.

“There’s a shared sense of pain coming off of last season that will turn into a great source of motivation.”
