NBL Next Star and Cairns Taipans guard Luke Paul will head to Duke University following the Hungry Jack’s NBL27 Season, joining the Blue Devils for their 2027-28 NCAA campaign.

Paul, who announced his commitment this morning on ESPN’s NBA Today, led Australia to a bronze medal at the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup in July, where he was named to the tournament's All-Star Five.

Paul’s move marks a new chapter for the Next Stars program, which develops young players for the game's highest levels.

There have been 13 Next Stars selected in the NBA Draft over the past seven years, with seven selected in the first round, helping the program build a reputation as one of the world's premier pathways to the NBA.

NBL General Manager of Next Stars Recruitment, Liam Santamaria, said the pathway is now broadening, with Paul heading to one of the most decorated programs in men's college basketball.

"Luke has earned this opportunity through his talent, work ethic and character," Santamaria said.

"The game is evolving, and so are the opportunities available to young players. We are proud to be a key part of Luke's journey and look forward to supporting him this season and beyond."

While Paul is yet to make his Cairns debut due to a pre-season ankle injury, he says his focus is on helping the team succeed.

"Training in this NBL environment is accelerating my development, and I'm thankful to the Taipans, Coach Adam Forde, the Next Stars program and everyone involved for helping me to improve," Paul said.

"I'm excited about committing to Duke, as it's a dream come true and I'm equally excited about giving absolutely everything I have to Cairns this season."

The Taipans' next game is against Melbourne United on Saturday, October 3 at John Cain Arena.
